I believe that handwritten letters still have value in this digital age, in fact I’d argue that they have even more value than before. Almost everyone uses the internet to connect with their loved ones, it is very rare to see someone communicate over paper nowadays. People have slowly stopped using paper to write over the decades and it has become more special and rare to use it for a letter now. I believe handwritten letters have value because when the person gets it, it shows them that the person really cares about them because they took the time to write on a physical piece of paper instead of just typing it on a phone or computer. If someone emails you or texts you, you can still feel the emotions that went into it but, on a handwritten letter it’s just different. The handwriting gives a different feeling to the person rather than reading a font from a text and it will be unique. Electronic messages are expected however a physical letter would be a pleasant surprise to the person it is meant for. A handwritten letter will also be remembered longer because it stays with the person that read it, they will remember it because it’s not everyday that they get physical letters. With a physical letter the reader can keep it, with an email or text the message will likely get lost within all the other messages and things in the phone. Physical letters will never lose their value because they are special, they are memorable, and they are unique.

Hi Nigel,
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree with you on this argument since I feel that letters can shine through the apathy that we experience on social media. We have become so accustomed to modern technology that we view no value in handwriting. This is not only false, but it also enforces the unhealthy apathy that we experience when meeting other people. We might be accustomed to the newest smartphone but we are not accustomed to regularly speaking to people through a screen alone. I find it ironic that wide-spread texting has made our society more apathetic about each other than it originally intended to.
Hi Nigel! I definitely agree with what you said about handwritten letters. I like how you called them “rare and unique” and you mentioned that they have even more value now than they did before. I also agree with your argument that handwritten cards and letters have more meaning than text messages because it shows that someone took the time to write their feelings out rather than quickly typing it and pressing send. All of your points in this argument were completely valid and I think you really captured the idea that handwritten cards are valuable and timeless!
ReplyDeleteHey Nigel, amazing blog this week. I 100% agree with you , that heartfelt, and sincerity of a handwritten letter has so much more meaning then and text message. it’s incredible how much technology has become our everyday norm and the change it’s had in our society, before friends would mail eachother back and forth and it was nothing more. But now anytime you get a letter it fills you with joy that someone took the time to sit down and get pen and paper and mail you a letter. I loved how you also felt that getting mail is “rare”. You made great point and inspired me to write my own letter for my friend, excellent job
